Situated at the end of the Ötz valley at an altitude of almost 2000 m, surrounded by glaciated three-thousand-metre peaks – the picturesque mountain village of Obergurgl-Hochgurgl. Known as the “Glacier Village of Tyrol”, it is often only a stones throw away from breathtaking viewpoints, exciting excursion destinations as well as classic Tyrolean alpine pastures & huts. For hikers, our diverse alpine landscape offers numerous opportunities to explore new things. For ambitious mountaineers, there are plenty of challenges on the high altitude tours. With the Ötztal Inside Summer Card you can experience the Ötztal as you have never seen it before.
On an enjoyable hike in Gurgl you pass calm mountain lakes, walk through centuries old pine forests and stride alongside flowing mountain streams. The numerous hiking trails and paths lead directly into nature and pure pleasure. Worthwhile hiking destinations include:
A high-altitude tour is a difficult undertaking. Mountaineers venturing to higher altitudes must be confident on snow-fields or scree. Stamina, sure footedness and techniques are also required. Those who fulfil the requirements will be rewarded with unique views of the Ötztal mountains.
Well known tours take you to the Zirmkogl, Hochfirst or Hinteren Spiegelkogl.
Intermediate tours on the Seelen glacier, Gurgler Scharte, Aperes Ferwalljoch or Gaisberg glacier.
Gentle panoramic hikes include the Piccard-round walk or the Seen-Tour.
Not to be forgotten: The crowning stage of the border crossing hiking path E5 starts in Gurgl.
Off to the pine forest – some of the most used hiking routes in the area lead past this fairy-tale-like place. The forest enchants with trees of up to 300 year old that line the trail. Visitors that are interested will learn many interesting facts about the Swiss stone pine trees, forest inhabitants (such as the Eurasian pine jay), the fauna and anecdotes about local people. The numerous playgrounds are ideal for children: for example at the Hohe Mut, where children are rewarded with breath-taking views of the surrounding mountains and glaciers while playing. Another playground awaits younger hikers at the Top Mountain Crosspoint.
